There is a place in Madrid that really left a remarkable sign on us and that we would strongly recommend to anyone that is in the Spanish capital to visit.
We were incredibly impressed with the amazing work done on Matadero Madrid, the old slaughterhouse now converted into a cultural and arts center where spaces are constantly changing and are at the service of the creative artists and designers that use them.
We had the chance to witness it for ourselves as we were lucky enough to visit Matadero Madrid on the first weekend of the month (completely by chance, we hadn’t planed on it) when Mercado Central de Diseño normally takes place.
This design market was a lovely surprise on top of the astonishment of being in such a creative and inspiring place such as Matadero. We started walking through the market and soon realized that the items on sale weren’t the ones you can find in any other market, not at all. They were quite unique and clearly not coming from an industrial mass production. There was a bit of everything in terms of design clothing and other fashion related accessories, arts and crafts, design decorations, unique artworks, graphic art and other design items.
Mercado Central de Diseño is a very unique design market a place, perhaps with hipsters in mind, but not only; apparently it’s one of the first design markets in Madrid to offer a platform for local Spanish professional designers and independent creative people.
This design market is fairly new, in fact it’s only been in operation since October 2013 that it takes place at the Matadero Madrid and it was born as a space for creative minds, where trend, novelty and originality can be promoted together with a sustainable design for everybody.
Why Is This Market So Special?
Mercado Central de Diseño is not only also a fantastic place to display great design and to go shopping, in fact it’s a place to spend some free time to relax, to meet friends and to have fun. Apart from buying a t-shirt from an emerging Spanish designer, there are plenty of workshops to take part in to learn something interesting and entirely new to you. This design market is a place for enjoyment, not just for shopping. It’s possible to listen to some free live music, have a bite to eat, to take a coffee or another refreshing drink in the company of friends on the small patio.
And the best part is that is FREE to enter, like most of the activities at Matadero. We think that a better location couldn’t be chosen for this design market, Matadero Madrid has all the requisites to hold such event.
We really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere at Mercado Central de Diseño, everybody was very friendly and it looked like everyone was having a good time, ourselves included. We wish there was a market or space like this one at the Matadero Madrid in every city to give the opportunity to local designers to showcase their own products.
If you are in Madrid during the first weekend of the month make sure not to miss this hot spot of culture, in fact, this design market is a great place to find high quality and original design products that will differentiate from almost all others.
